This ceramic project, linguistic in nature, plays with “place names” that the Lenape people and early Dutch inhabitants used to geographically describe present day New York City and surrounding regions. Inspiration for names and images came from researching 16th and 17th century navigational maps. The mapmakers phonetically transposed original native language words into Dutch, that later became Anglicized.
I partnered with potter, Steve Nutt, who created red clay plates, platters, bowls, and tiles that I painted with blue underglaze over dry white slip.
